Why Golf Should Be Fun: My Philosophy on Getting Started

Writer: Stacey KoppensStacey Koppens

Golf is often seen as a game for those who are already skilled, but I believe the first step in getting into golf is making sure it’s fun, not frustrating. As a coach, my approach centers around helping players enjoy the game at every stage.

Golf Shouldn't Be About Perfection:

A lot of people think they need to be perfect from day one, and that’s just not true. Whether you’re a beginner, a junior, or someone returning to the game, it’s all about finding enjoyment in the experience. In my sessions, I focus on playfulness over technique—yes, we’ll work on fundamentals, but we do it in a way that makes people feel empowered rather than overwhelmed.

The Power of Exploration

One of my favorite things to do with new golfers is to give them a chance to explore. This could mean starting with the short game or just exploring with shots at the range. I want players to feel like they’re in control of their learning, and exploring the game helps to build that confidence.

Golf Is for Everyone

Another key aspect of my coaching philosophy is that golf is for people of all abilities. I’ve had the privilege of coaching individuals with physical and developmental disabilities, and I’ve seen first hand how golf can provide a sense of accomplishment, even if it's just sinking a putt. The joy that comes from those little wins is what keeps people coming back.

To sum it up:

Golf can feel intimidating at first, but when we make the game enjoyable, we unlock a world of possibility. I encourage everyone, no matter your skill level, to give it a go. There’s no “wrong” way to have fun on the course—just keep swinging and see where the game takes you!
